All heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) units need maintenance from time to time to clean or replace filters. Inefficient filters lead to a low heat exchange rate, which causes wasted energy and higher energy bills. Blocked filters could also cause overheating and even lead to a fire.

There is a lot of information available on how to save more money or avoid safety hazards when dealing with the maintenance of HVAC. Unfortunately, the problem is that there is usually an overload of information, plenty of which is laced with inaccuracies and misconceptions.

To ensure that you can distinguish between factual and false information, Country Pro Power Duct Cleaning has dispelled three of the most widely believed duct cleaning myths.

Myth 1: You can use a reusable filter for a lifetime.

This is not true. In our opinion, there’s no such thing as a lifetime reusable filter. A washable filter will not remove all the dirt completely. Most reusable filters are only meant for use a maximum of five times and not recommended for use throughout the year. They should only be used if at all during high pollen season, spring or fall when things get dirtier.

The other problem with these so-called lifetime filters is they restrict airflow, which can drastically reduce the lifetime of a blower motor or heat exchangers. It will also cause your system to overwork.

Myth 2: You have to clean your HVAC system every year.

We disagree. When an HVAC system has been cleaned using NADCA standards, the amount of depth and quality that is required to do such a job will last three to five years. The ducts get dirtier faster when faced with lots of pets in the home, hardwood floors, smoking, and using a wood stove. Even in these conditions, the ducts only need to be serviced every three to five years if done correctly.

Myth 3: The cheapest vendor will save you more money.

Just like in any other industry cheaper is not always better. There’s a considerable market out there, and people will use lower prices to compete, which may not provide quality. The first thing anyone searching for a good quality HVAC cleaner should do is research. Ask friends and families for referrals, because what may save money in the short term, may end up costing more in the long run.
